Check the employee status before preparing a work-permit application

A French employer hiring a non-EU national should first determine whether prior work authorisation is actually required. Some residence permits and immigration statuses already include the right to work, while other cases require an employer-side application before employment can begin.

The employer, role and candidate all matter

The application is not only about the candidate. The employer, proposed role, employment terms and supporting documents must align with the applicable route. Depending on the situation, the file can involve evidence about the employer, contract, candidate qualifications and the recruitment context.

Work authorisation is only one stage of the move

Where an employer-side authorisation is required, approval does not automatically replace every immigration step. A candidate abroad may still need a visa or residence process before entering or starting work in France. The sequence therefore needs to connect the employer filing with the candidate’s consular and residence steps.

Plan payroll onboarding before the start date

Once the employee is entitled to work, the employer still needs to prepare the French employment administration and payroll setup. Identity information, employment terms, salary, applicable social rules and payroll reporting need to be ready for the first payroll cycle.

Avoid starting with the wrong route

One of the most common operational risks is preparing documents before confirming whether the candidate already has work rights or which authorisation route applies. That can lead to inconsistent contracts, unnecessary filings or delays between immigration approval and payroll onboarding.

Francosetup’s international employee hiring service focuses on the employer side of this process. If the hire will become part of a French payroll, the project can then connect with French payroll management.
